Dé Neo-Trad Latin band Chapulines brengt het vuur van de Caraïben en de Golf van Mexico rechtstreeks naar het podium. Met muzikanten uit Mexico, Spanje, Cuba en België staat deze Gentse band garant voor een explosieve mix van Mexicaanse "son jarocho" volksmuziek, cumbia, merengue, punta garífuna, reggae, Spaanse rumba en son cubano. Traditionele klanken krijgen een hedendaagse twist, waardoor hun muziek zowel authentiek als verrassend fris klinkt.

De groep laat zich inspireren door de rijke mestizo-muziektraditie, ontstaan uit culturele kruisbestuivingen tijdens de koloniale periode. Vandaag zetten zij deze fusie verder, met een moderne blik en een nieuw thuisland als klankbord: België. Hun repertoire is een frisse afwisseling van eigen composities en eigenzinnige interpretaties van traditionele muziek – altijd dansbaar, altijd verrassend.

Als vaste waarde in de Belgische muziekscène stonden ze al op grote festivals zoals Sfinks en de Gentse Feesten. Ook internationaal maakten ze indruk, met optredens op La Linea - The London Latin Festival, Floating Castle in Slovenië en diverse festivals in Italië en Mexico.

Bio

Chapulines ontstond in 2019 na een muzikale ontmoeting, bij de lagune van Bacalar in Mexico, tussen zanger en jarana-speler Beto Robledo Zaragoza (Mexico) en violiste Graciela Zaera Moraña (Spanje). Terug in Europa, werd de groep vervolledigd met percussie en contrabas. Sindsdien spelen ze samen concerten met Gent (België) als thuisbasis.

In maart 2020 won Chapulines de muziekwedstrijd CopaSessions na een selectie van meer dan 160 Vlaamse artiesten. Als resultaat zullen ze twee keer op de mainstage van Copacobana Festival mogen staan.

Tijdens 2020 deden ze ook meerdere livestream sessies waarin één voor de Live Untapped Sessions met meer dan 12.000 kijkers en een twee afleveringen reeks: “Muzikale rondreis in de Caraïben" met professor Natalia Armijo Canto als presentator.

Eind 2021 brachten ze hun eerste EP "Bululú" uit. De titel van het album verwijst naar de reizende en multiculturele geest van de band. Daarom besluiten ze om in het voorjaar van 2022 hun eerste internationale release tour te doen in Mexico. Deze reis zal ook dienen als een muzikale residentie in het Luna Negra kamp in Jáltipan, Veracruz, georganiseerd door leden van de Grammy genomineerde band "Los Cojolites".

Chapulines heeft internationale erkenning gekregen. In de lente van 2023 werden ze geïnterviewd door BBC World Music Services voorafgaand aan hun optreden op het Latin Music Festival "La Linea" in Londen. Datzelfde jaar voltooien ze hun internationale aanwezigheid met een succesvolle tournee door Italië.

2025 markeert de release van hun nieuwe singles, die uitsluitend bestaan uit originele nummers, geproduceerd onder leiding van Sinuhe Padilla Isunza, producer uit New York en oprichter van JaranaBeat.

Ghent-based Neo-Trad Latin band Chapulines brings the Mexican flavour into a lively fusion of cultures and musical genres. Starting from the Mexican ‘son jarocho’ traditional music, the band is further strongly inspired by Caribbean rhythms and sounds such as Cumbia, Merengue, Reggae, Punta Garífuna, Son Cubano and Rumba.

With musicians from Mexico, Spain, Cuba and Belgium, Chapulines presents, acoustically and powerfully, a danceable and fresh alternation between their own compositions and unique interpretations of traditional music.

An active player on the Belgian music scene, with performances at prominent festivals such as Sfinks or Gentse Feesten, Chapulines has also impressed internationally, with appearances at La Linea - The London Latin Festival, Floating Castle in Slovenia, and various festivals in Italy and Mexico.

Bio

The band was formed in Mexico on the shores of the stunning Bacalar Lagoon after a musical encounter between singer and Jarana player Beto Robledo Zaragoza (Mexico) and violinist Graciela Zaera Moraña (Spain). Upon returning to Europe, the group was completed with percussion and double bass. Since late 2019, they have been performing together, with Ghent (Belgium) as their home base.

In March 2020, Chapulines won the music competition "CopaSessions" after a selection from more than 160 Flemish artists. As a result, they will have the opportunity to perform twice on the main stage of the Copacobana Festival. Throughout 2020, they made several live broadcasts, highlighting one for the "Live Untapped Sessions" with more than 12,000 viewers and a two-episode series entitled "Musical road trip with Chapulines in the Caribbean" with Professor Natalia Armijo Canto as host.

At the end of 2021 they released their first EP: "Bululú". The title of the album reflects the travelling and multicultural spirit of the band. And so, in the spring of 2022, they will make their first international tour in Mexico. This trip will also serve as a musical residency at the Luna Negra camp in Jáltipan, Veracruz, organised by members of the Grammy-nominated band "Los Cojolites".

Chapulines has gained international recognition. In the spring of 2023, they were interviewed by BBC World Music Services prior to their performance at the London Latin Music Festival "La Linea". And they culminated their international presence in the same year with a successful tour of Italy.

2025 will mark the release of their new singles, featuring entirely original compositions, produced by Sinuhe Padilla Isunza, the New York-based producer and founder of Jarana Beat.
